The primary function of a motocross clutch is to allow the rotating crankshaft to engage with the gearbox. Engaging the clutch lets you select a gear, pull away and change gear as your speed increases. A motocross clutch consists of a circular clutch basket and a set of intermediate steel plates. The plates have teeth on the inside, interspersed with a set of friction plates with teeth on the outside. A spring-loaded pressure plate on top holds everything together.

As the clutch is directly attached to the crankshaft when the engine is running, it travels too fast to be able to select a gear. By pulling in the lever, the clutch disengages. This action allows it to slow down enough to engage with the gearbox. Like all moving parts, motocross clutches wear out. Clutch cables

The clutch cable is one of the simplest parts of the clutch operating process. Here you can opt for a straight replacement part. These are inexpensive enough for you to buy two, so you keep one as a spare. Alternatively, choose a higher-spec version and go for a performance upgrade. Stronger wire resists stretch when constructed from higher quality components than the stock version. The clutch cable will not even need lubrication if you choose one with a Teflon liner.

Clutch covers

Clutch covers are on the outside of the engine and they take a real beating from flying debris, a motorcycle boot or impact damage. Aftermarket clutch covers are lighter and stronger than factory options. They are often available in many different colours to make your engine pop.

Clutch baskets

This component bolts directly to the crankshaft. It forms the base of the whole clutch assembly. There's a lot of movement and moving parts in the clutch basket, so choosing the right replacement is essential. As with most of the components in this section, you will find direct replacements or upgrade alternatives. Apart from being tough and durable, high-performance clutch baskets are lighter. Moreover, the reduced rotating mass means the crank can spin slightly faster.

Clutch kit

A clutch kit makes a great choice if you need to repair or replace your clutch components. Most kits consist of steel plates, a friction plate selection, and a set of clutch springs. So if you buy a clutch kit and the components are manufactured from the same material and to the same high standard, they will have extended but similar wear rates. Clutch kits are also available as a performance upgrade. When added to a matching clutch basket, high-performance plates and springs make for a tough clutch with good weight savings.

Friction plate

A clutch mechanism needs two sets of plates to operate. Friction plates consist of a set of circular steel plates with friction material evenly spaced around the surface of the plate.

Steel plate

Like friction plates, steel plates come in sets. They are plain steel discs which fit alternatively in between the friction plates.
